Methodology

At CalcWell, we believe in transparency. This page explains the calculation methods, formulas, and principles used in our calculators.

General Principles

All our calculators follow these core principles:

  • Standard formulas: We use widely-accepted mathematical formulas
  • Client-side processing: All calculations run in your browser using JavaScript
  • Precision: We use IEEE 754 double-precision floating-point arithmetic
  • Rounding: Results are typically rounded to appropriate decimal places for readability

Percentage Calculations

Percentage of a Number

Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Value

Percent Change

Change = ((New Value - Old Value) ÷ |Old Value|) × 100

Reverse Percentage

Original = (Result × 100) ÷ Percentage

Date and Time Calculations

Age Calculation

Age is calculated by comparing birth date to reference date, counting complete years, then remaining months, then remaining days. This accounts for varying month lengths and leap years.

Date Difference

We calculate the exact millisecond difference between dates and convert to days, weeks, months, and years. Month and year counts follow calendar conventions.

Time Zone Conversions

We use the browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat API, which handles daylight saving time transitions automatically based on IANA time zone data.

Fraction Operations

Addition/Subtraction

We find the least common multiple (LCM) of denominators, convert fractions to equivalent forms, then add/subtract numerators and simplify.

Multiplication/Division

Multiplication: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a×c)/(b×d)
Division: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a×d)/(b×c)

Simplification

We use the Euclidean algorithm to find the greatest common divisor (GCD) and divide both numerator and denominator by it.

Statistical Calculations

Mean (Average)

Mean = Sum of all values ÷ Count of values

Median

Sort values, then take the middle value (odd count) or average of two middle values (even count).

Mode

The value(s) that appear most frequently. If all values appear once, there is no mode.

Standard Deviation (Sample)

σ = √(Σ(x - μ)² ÷ (n-1))

We use sample standard deviation (n-1 in denominator) by default.

Interest Calculations

Simple Interest

Interest = Principal × Rate × Time

Compound Interest

A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)

Where: A = final amount, P = principal, r = annual rate (decimal), n = compounding frequency per year, t = time in years

Unit Conversions

We use standard conversion factors from authoritative sources. For example:

  • 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters (exact)
  • 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms (exact)
  • °F = °C × 9/5 + 32

GPA Calculation

We use the standard 4.0 scale common in US education:

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Grade point values: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, etc.

Sales Tax

Tax Amount = Subtotal × (Tax Rate ÷ 100)

Total = Subtotal + Tax Amount

Testing and Verification

Our calculation functions are covered by unit tests to verify accuracy across various inputs, including edge cases. We regularly review and test our formulas against known correct results.

Limitations

As noted in our Disclaimer, JavaScript floating-point arithmetic has inherent limitations that can cause small rounding errors in some calculations. For most practical purposes, these errors are negligible.
