How to Use the Discount Calculator

Our discount calculator helps you quickly figure out sale prices, savings, and discount percentages. Whether you're shopping during a sale or comparing prices, this tool makes it easy to understand exactly how much you'll save.

Calculate Sale Price

Enter the original price and the discount percentage to see the final sale price and your total savings. This is perfect for figuring out the actual price during sales events or when using discount codes.

Formula: Sale Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount ÷ 100)

Find Discount Percentage

If you know the original price and the sale price, this mode calculates the discount percentage for you. This is useful for comparing deals or understanding how good a sale really is.

Formula: Discount % = ((Original - Sale) ÷ Original) × 100

Discount Calculation Examples

  • Black Friday: A $299 TV at 40% off = $179.40 (you save $119.60)
  • Clearance: Shoes marked down from $85 to $51 = 40% discount
  • Coupon: 15% off a $45 order = $38.25 final price

Tips for Smart Shopping

When shopping sales, it's important to understand the actual value you're getting. A high percentage discount isn't always the best deal—compare the final prices across different stores and consider the original price.

Be aware of "anchor pricing" where stores artificially inflate the original price to make discounts seem larger. Use our calculator to check if a deal is genuinely good by comparing sale prices to regular prices elsewhere.

Understanding Stacked Discounts

When stores offer multiple discounts (like 20% off + an extra 10% for members), they're applied sequentially, not added together. A 20% + 10% discount is actually about 28% total savings, not 30%.

Common Discount Scenarios

Use our calculator for any shopping situation:

  • Retail sales and clearance events
  • Online coupon codes
  • Member or loyalty discounts
  • Student or military discounts
  • Bundle deals and buy-one-get-one offers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a discount percentage?

To find the discount percentage: ((Original Price - Sale Price) ÷ Original Price) × 100. For example, if an item originally costs $100 and is now $75, the discount is ((100 - 75) ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%.

How do I calculate sale price from a discount?

Sale Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount Percentage ÷ 100). For a $80 item with 25% off: $80 × (1 - 0.25) = $80 × 0.75 = $60.

Can I calculate multiple discounts?

Yes! For stacked discounts, apply them sequentially. A 20% discount followed by an additional 10% off $100: First discount gives $80, then 10% off $80 gives $72. Note: This is NOT the same as a single 30% discount.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Original Price = Sale Price ÷ (1 - Discount Percentage ÷ 100). If an item costs $60 after a 25% discount: $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80 original price.
